Testimony presented to the ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE, March 10, 2008

on HB 5828 (RAISED) AN ACT CONCERNING HUNTING OF MOOSE AND BEAR.

by Robert T. Crook, Director

We Support the management concept as necessary and believe DEP will act on both issues in the near future, probably Bear sooner than Moose. But, we believe any action at this time may be premature.

Whatever standards are developed, Regulations must be processed through the Regulations Review Committee and passed. At this time, we don’t believe DEP Bureau of Natural Resources has finalized the scientific data required to address expected opposition to regulations.

We understand there is a significant Bear nuisance problem affecting farmers, beekeepers, and landowners, including those in population dense areas who fear for their and children’s safety. Moose present a different problem – no one wants to have a Moose/Vehicle collision.

The Coalition and many hunters are supportive of proper management of both species and will continue to press for regulatory action.

Thank you.
