After a five-year study, Dr. Larry Katz, head of the Department of Animal
Science at Rutgers University's Cook College, has condemned immunocontraception
as "an absolutely absurd, ridiculous and biologically unworkable method of
controlling deer." His study showed that "deer herds are much
too large and far-ranging to be reduced appreciably by immunocontraception."
In the September issue of WLFA's Update, it was reported that New Jersey and New
York might soon be experimenting with immunocontraception. ...science has
proven what sportsmen have known for a long time - immunocontraception is not a
solution to controlling deer populations.
Editor: Deer immunocontraception was philosophically promoted and financially supported by the Humane Society of the US and monitored by DEP in Mumford Cove for about 4-5 years now. Mumford Cove is next to Bluff Point Coastal Reserve where DEP has had a serious deer reduction program, using public and lately DEP controlled hunts, for over a decade. The biological and historical importance of MC and BP efforts is the contrast (immuno v. hunting). Throughout CT, many deer infected towns have been watching the results and the findings are a significant loss for HSUS. The results are now in - other CT towns will logically have to adopt hunting as the ONLY reasonable solution to deer overpopulation. DEP has significant scientific data, the town has issued press releases, and DEP has a preliminary scientific article in their Wildlife publication recently released. More DEP data will be forthcoming we are assured.
Special Controlled Deer Hunt @ Mumford Cove (Groton) Hunters Needed!
Dear Sportsmen:
14 September 2000
The Mumford Cove (MC) Community in Groton recently voted to conduct a controlled deer hunt on community-owned lands in an effort to significantly reduce a large deer herd. This hunt will be conducted in cooperation with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and may include some state-owned land adjacent to MC, which also has a large deer herd. The hunt will be designed to safely and efficiently reduce the deer herd that uses MC. This will be an opportunity for sportsmen to assist a community in reducing a local deer herd. If you are interested in assisting MC residents and would like to participate in this deer management program complete and mail in this form immediately.
Thank you,
